Commander Allen "Al" Zang Age 86 years, passed away May 27, 2014. Al held a B.S. degree in marine transportation from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and a naval architect and marine engineering degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Al's military career began when he was 16. He was a retired commander with the U.S. Navy Reserves. Al was instrumental in the ship building industry from 1956 until he became the president and part owner of Nashville Bridge Company (Nabrico) Division. He was an innovator in developing the Hopper Barge. He had broad experience in construction of offshore drill rigs and lock and dam section, overhaul of ocean tankers, tugs, barges, and towboats. Preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Fredrick Zang and Y Rita Parment. He is survived by wife, Nancy Zang; children, Sandra Zang Gray and Hal Grady Zang; step children, Ken Eaton and Richard Eaton; sister, Laurel Zang Lehrer; brothers, George and Neil Zang; 6 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. The Life Celebration service will be Monday, June 2, 2014, at 12:30pm with Celebrant Paula Gordon officiating. Interment will be at 2pm at Middle TN Veterans Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to the wounded warrior project or MIT. Visitation will be on Monday from 11am until 12:30pm at WEST HARPETH FUNERAL HOME, 6962 Charlotte Pike; 352-9400.
