Bertram Barkley (Jay) Dennis, Jr. Age 71 of Nashville, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at St. Thomas Hospital Midtown in Nashville. Jay lived his entire life in the Nashville area. He loved Middle Tennessee and talked often about its natural beauty and the authenticity of its people.
Jay graduated from Two Rivers High School and then went on to The University of Tennessee at Martin. Afterwards, he went to work for the family business, Rock Products Inc., Nashville. From the 1980s until his retirement in 2014, he ran the business. An avid reader, he was known to finish several books a week, working his way through all the classics. His intellect was apparent, with friends encouraging him to join MENSA. Quoting Groucho Marx, he would say, "I refuse to join any club that would have me".
Jay is survived by two daughters, Stacey Looper and Susanne McGowan, and son-in-law James Looper. In addition, he leaves behind three grandchildren, J. Wesley Looper, Kelsey Hood and Sydney McGowan; one great grandson, Ki' Ari; a brother, Brian Dennis; a companion, Charlotte Scott, as well as numerous friends and relatives.
His sense of humor was his greatest gift, helping people appreciate the ridiculousness of life. When you remember him, share a joke and spread the laughter. The family wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff on Fifth Floor Kidd of St. Thomas Midtown, and to all of the physicians at St. Thomas Midtown and TN Oncology. Donations may be made to the Saint Thomas Health Foundation in his memory.
A Celebration of Jay's life will be on Saturday, April 24, 2021, at 11:30AM, at West Harpeth Funeral Home on Charlotte Pike. Interment will follow at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens.
Visitation with the family will be on Saturday from 9:30AM until the service time at 11:30AM, both at West Harpeth Funeral Home.
