Dennis Wayne Ames, always know as Wayne, age 77, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away due to heart failure on August 18, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betsy Ames, his children Genevieve Ames and her husband Darren of Waldoboro, Maine, Alexander Ames and his wife Patricia of Medford, New York, Jacob Ames and his wife Rachel of Severna Park, Maryland, Phillip Ames and his wife Tess of Washington, DC, Lily-Kathryn Ames and her fiancé Sean of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Noelle Ames and her husband Joshua of Seattle, Washington; grandchildren, Riley Ames, Cassidy Ames, Nathaniel Ames and Ainsley Ames.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dennis E. Ames and Martha Beauregard, brother Richard and sisters Judith and Patricia.
Wayne was born in Rockland, Maine on September 17, 1944, and grew up in Rockland and in Bath, Maine. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in December of 1961. He rose to the enlisted rank of Gunnery Sergeant before moving to the Financial Accounting field and being selected to the Limited Duty Officer (LDO) program and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in June of 1975. His career in the Marine Corps included two tours of duty in Vietnam as an infantryman plus teaching at the Marine Corp Command and Staff college at Quantico, Virginia; implementing a new financial accounting and reporting system at Marine Corp Air Station, Kaneohe, Hawaii; and serving as fiscal officer for Fleet Marine Force Atlantic at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
After leaving the Marine Corp in December of 1976, Wayne worked in finance and accounting with construction companies in both Atlanta and Long Island, New York, becoming a Vice President for Finance and Information Technology. He formed his own business, Ames Consulting, in 1985, recommending and implementing computer systems for a variety of businesses. He then served as the Manager of Information Systems for a manufacturing company in New York before moving to Tennessee in 2006 and retiring. He continued working a variety of jobs after his retirement.
Wayne considered his greatest achievement to be the family of five children that he raised with his wife Betsy. They, along with his grandchildren, were his pride and joy.
Wayne was active in Presbyterian churches he attended over the years and served as both an elder and a deacon in addition to teaching Sunday School and volunteering for the Room in the Inn program at Bellevue Presbyterian church in Nashville. He greatly enjoyed coaching his children’s soccer teams and served as a Boy Scout leader for many years. He was devoted to veterans’ issues.
Wayne loved the New England Patriots football team and supported them from the time they were formed in 1960 through many years of few wins and many losses in the 1970’s and 1980’s before the glory years of the 2000’s. He also loved model trains and has been working on an N-scale train layout in his garage for the last several years. His love of computer games and anything technology related was a well-known by friends and family. One of his favorite places in the world was the Great Smoky Mountains which he visited hiked with family many times over the years. He enjoyed reading about history, particularly military history and visiting battlefields around the country. For relaxation he read spy novels and watched movies, especially action-adventure films.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 27th at 11:00 a.m. at Bellevue Presbyterian Church, 100 Cross Timbers Drive, Nashville, Tennessee. Burial will be at the Middle Tennessee Veterans’ Cemetery in Pegram, Tennessee.
