The richer a life is with its challenges, triumphs, beauties, mercies, arrivals, departures, successes and sorrows, the harder it is to express simply in an event such as this. We all live with the knowledge that one day we will lose from this earthly plain, those dearest and essential to us. Yet, we try. And that’s what this is for, to try and throw arms around what’s “un-holdable” now. It’s simply amazing what a single life embodies and radiates. Doreen Ann Webb of Nashville, TN was and still is amazing to those who knew her. She passed away on May 26th of 2024. She was 71 years old.
Doreen loved all manner of fun and glowing experiences. She loved to travel and cruise and cook and laugh. She loved Bruce Springsteen, the song “What a Wonderful World”, her friends, her family, and was a devout Christian. She was thoughtful, patient, generous, and remarkably resilient with humor and green eyes that saw beauty and possibility in nearly everything.
Doreen was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 30th, 1952. She graduated from Chester High School. Later she earned an Associate Degree and flourished as a compassionate civil servant at the IRS. Between all the mile markers in life, Doreen Ann Webb lived via curiosity, affection, faith, hope and leaving things better than she found them.
She was preceded in death by her Mother, Father and her sister, Robin. She cared for her Mom through a terrible but somehow ultimately beautiful waltz with Alzheimer’s. It was Doreen’s heart and generosity that made her Mom’s last years as comfortable and warm as possible. It wasn’t easy, but she made it seem almost so… And so beautiful.
As time moved on, Doreen Ann Webb’s family and legacy grew vaster. All who loved her and were loved by her know who we (and they) are. There are so many of us I don’t wish to list names, we know who we are. I simply don’t want to leave anyone out. We know the sorrow and bittersweetness we now honor and move through. However, I do wish to say this as if to each of you, she loved you all.
When finally settling down in Nashville for the last few years of her life, she eased into a pretty little place between two of her three sons and their families. It’s here she became a warm and constant light of matriarchal wisdom, kindness, ease, fun, light and generosity. She volunteered and attended at The Church of Christ in Bellevue, TN. She quietly made donation after donation to organizations she believed in the work of. She was righteous and inclusive, strong and gentle. She volunteered for the Salvation Army and kept an immaculate house with a distinct scent and air of welcome. We will miss her presence here for all of the time we are gifted. But above all, each of us is grateful, deeply grateful to have known and experienced such a loving presence that earned and grew her graces only to share them so generously.
Flowers are appreciated but if you wish to do something else, please consider a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in her name, Doreen Ann Webb. We know that either thoughtful generosity would make her smile her warm Irish smile.
