Dr. Mukul Ranjan Banerjee, 82, of Nashville, peacefully passed at his home with his family at his side on Friday, December 6, 2019.
Dr. Banerjee was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh and moved to Kolkata, India where he received his Veterinary Degree. He then came to the United States to pursue his Ph.D. at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. Following his graduate studies he held positions at Indiana University and University of Florida. Dr. Banerjee spent the majority of his professional academic career as a tenured professor at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN.
On December 4, 1968, Dr. Banerjee married his wife of 51 years, Gita (Ganguly) Banerjee in Kolkata, India. Together they raised two children, Amit Banerjee (Pauline Koh-Banerjee) and Sumita Banerjee Keller (Dustin Keller). In retirement, Dr. Banerjee enjoyed spending time with his 3 beautiful and mischievous grandchildren, Ana Banerjee (13), Naryan Banerjee (11) and Ranjan Keller (5).
Dr. Banerjee was very involved in the local Indian Community, including serving in multiple leadership roles. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, gardening and traveling. He loved spending time with friends, playing cards and sharing stories often highlighted by his unique sense of humor.
Services will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at West Harpeth Funeral Home & Crematory, 6962 Charlotte Pike Nashville, TN 37209. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by Puja at 12:00 p.m. and Memorial Service at 12:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you make donations to Meharry Medical College in memory of Dr. Mukul Banerjee.
