Dr. Augustus Bankhead completed his earthly journey on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at the age of 89. He was born August 5, 1933, in Little Rock, Arkansas to R.B. and Annie Mae Bankhead. He graduated from Dunbar High School in Little Rock and subsequently served four years in the United States Air Force. He received his undergraduate degree from Tennessee State University (formerly Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial College) in Business Education and his graduate degrees from George Peabody College for Teachers (now a part of Vanderbilt University). He was an avid horticulturist whose green thumb yielded spectacular results. The beautiful species in his greenhouse and other spaces were a testament to the time, care, and passion that he invested in his hobby. Dr. Bankhead retired from Tennessee State University in 2006 as the Vice President for Academic Affairs and a full Professor tenured in the College of Business. He was a great educator, mentor, and leader. At various times during his 48 years at the university, he also held the positions of Interim Vice President for Administration, Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Studies for the College of Business, and the Director of Cooperative Education. He was a faithful and dedicated member of First Baptist Church Capitol Hill, where he served on the Men’s Usher Board and various committees. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Joe Lee Bankhead and James Allen Bankhead, and his sister Annie B. Gideon. He leaves behind to cherish his memory a host of family members and friends. A private family memorial service will be held in Arkansas.
