Dr. Shanmukhan V. Chiyyarath of Madison, Alabama, who unexpectedly left us on October 4, 2022 at 12:13 pm at the age of 79.He was born as son of Mrs. Mangattil Devaky and Mr. Chiyyarath R. Velayudhan,on July 22, 1943 in Thrissur, Kerala, India.
Shanmukhan married his life companion, Ulpala, in 1974 in Trivandrum, Kerala, India.Shanmukhan graduated from the Government Engineering College at Thrissur with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1965. In 1965, he moved to the United States to pursuea Master's degree and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Operations Research at the University of Texas at Austin.
He started his professional career as a professor at Texas A&M university, College Station, Texas,teaching Operations Research for 5 years. Later, he moved to Texarkana, Texas and worked at The Red River Army Depot. He retired from US Army Space and Missile Defense Command in Huntsville, Alabama after serving for 30 years.
He loved photography, music, travelling and spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters. He served his community in many ways including AshaKiran, an organization to empower South Asian community in North Alabama, and Huntsville India Classical Performing Arts (HICPA), an organization promoting Indian classical music and arts.
Shanmukhan is preceded in death by his older brothers, Chandrahasan, and Surendran, and younger sister, Devasena Sreenivasan. He is survived by his siblings Dr. Girija Vallabhan,Dr. Nalini Vasu, Dr. Rathna Bushan, Dr. Sreenivasan, Dr. Sathees and Jithendran.
Shanmukhan will be greatly missed but fondly remembered forever. Your thoughts and prayers have comforted our family during this time.
Visitation for Dr. Shanmukhan Chiyyarath will be Saturday,October 8th from 12-1pm. Funeral Service will follow from 1-3pm in the chapel of West Harpeth Funeral Home.
