Dr. Frances Isley Hardie passed away January 8, 2017. Fran was born to Robert and Marie Isley in Gary, Indiana on June 14, 1926. She attended Rockford College in Illinois, Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts, and Peabody College and Vanderbilt University in Nashville. She received her Ph.D. In Russian Literature from Vanderbilt.
Fran worked at Vanderbilt University Libraries from 1968-1991, retiring as head of collections and acquisitions. She was a member of the Vanderbilt Garden Club, Bridge Club, and Women's Club, the Jane Austen Society of North America, and the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
Fran was preceded in death by her eldest son James Alexander (Sandy), and is survived by her son Steve and her grandchildren Francie, Ian, and Bonnie. The family would like to thank Janice Matheny and her caregivers, whose kind work allowed Fran to remain in her home for several years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the P.E.O. Foundation, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50312. The P.E.O. Foundation supports achievement and advancement of women through scholarships, grants, and awards.
