Harvey Leroy Floyd was born February 17, 1931, in Grenada County, Mississippi, and died peacefully at his residence on August 7, 2018, in Nashville, TN.
He spent most of his early years in Greenville, Mississippi. After graduating high school, he went to Freed-Hardeman College, where he met his future wife, Virginia Lee Austin.
From there they both attended David Lipscomb College, graduating on June 1, 1953, and then they married on June 5, 1953.
Harvey obtained his master's degree from Harding University, and he joined the faculty of then, David Lipscomb College, (now university), in the fall of 1955. He held his teaching position for 55 years through full and part time teaching. He taught Greek and New Testament courses. He obtained his Ph.D. in comparative literature from Vanderbilt University in June 1969. Harvey served on the committee in the 1970's that created the translation of the New Testament English version for the deaf. Also, in the 1980's, Harvey wrote Is the Holy Spirit for Me?
He retired May 1, 2010, after 55 years of doing what he loved. He was honored as an outstanding teacher three times.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Eunice Pennington Floyd.
Harvey is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia Floyd; his son, Harvey Leslie Floyd "H.L," his brother, James Talley Floyd and his wife Martha; his sister, Anna Jean Floyd Ritzenthaler, (her late husband, Jim); aunt, Lucille Floyd Miller of Mississippi and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He also leaves to cherish his memory many students who had great respect and fondness for him.
For the last 40 years, Harvey also taught the international Bible class at Harpeth Hills Church of Christ.
Visitation will be on Friday, August 10, 2018, from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Harpeth Hills Church of Christ. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, at 11:00am, with visitation beginning at 10:00am at Harpeth Hills Auditorium.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Harvey and Virginia Floyd Endowed Scholarship at Lipscomb University. A private family interment will be later.
