Joe C. Huffman, 81, passed away peacefully at home in Nashville, TN on July 22, 2022. He is predeceased by brothers Sam, James, Harold, and Joe Kenneth Huffman, and sisters Elizabeth McConnell and Mildred Howard. Joe leaves behind his wife, Sarah Griffith Huffman; brother Bill Huffman; daughters Jodi Thompson (Scot) and Brooke Mayberry (Kody); granddaughters Abby Webb (Brandon) and Caitlyn Thompson; grandsons Colin Thompson (Ashton) and Walker Thompson (Frances); cherished great-grandsons Lucas James Webb and Dunes Dupree Thompson; sisters-in-law Josephine Huffman of Greenville, Betty Polk (Alvin) of Nashville, Margaret Florence of Louisville; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
The youngest of 8 children, Joe was born on February 1,1941 to the late James L. and Ollie Elizabeth Huffman of Greenville, SC. He served in the Army Reserves. The day Joe picked up a guitar his brother, James, brought home from the service, his charted course in music began. In the ‘60s, he and brothers Bill and Harold opened Mark Five Recording studios in Greenville, where countless gospel touring groups were able to record and distribute their music. In the ‘70s and ‘80s, Joe was recruited to come to Nashville as a producer, where he worked with many gospel recording artists, winning numerous industry Dove Awards along the way. Joe was never more at home than in the studio.
In the early ‘80s he co-founded Meadowgreen Music, the Christian division of country giant Tree Publishing.
An excellent golfer, in retirement Joe also continued to enjoy playing guitar, songwriting, and creating in his home studio.
We already miss his twinkling blue eyes, his kind nature, and inescapable kidding…but most of all, we will miss his true, steady sense of self, and incredibly strong, inner core of faith.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 26, 4-6 pm, with a memorial service on Wednesday, July 27, 11 am, both at Woodmont Christian Church, 3601 Hillsboro Road, Nashville, TN 37215. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
