John G. Young, Jr.

Born May 6, 1959, John G. Young, Jr. - husband, son, father and friend - went home to God on December 26, 2016. John was a man of deep abiding faith and was at peace with God. A dedicated and award-winning firefighter, he served for over 16 years with the Nashville Fire Department and was the Commander of the Honor Guard. John received the highest honor of the Silver Star, presented by Gov. McWherter, and Chief Buck Dozier.

He was a hazardous materials specialist and a skilled scuba diver and was dive rescue with the Nashville Fire Department. John was very athletic. He loved to snow ski, winning one gold, two silver and one bronze medal at the International Fire Fighters Winter Games. He was a tournament water skier.

He loved backpacking, rappelling, hiking and being in nature. He was a motor cross champion during his high school years, winning over 100 trophies.

John grew up in Nashville and graduated from Antioch High School. He attended Volunteer State College (paramedic curriculum) and took numerous classes offered by the Fire Academy. John had a heart of gold and was a true humanitarian, willing to help anyone at any time. He volunteered at his church, The Center for Spiritual Living Nashville.

John is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Barber-Young; father, John Young, Sr. (Jane); and brother, Joe (Chris). Also, step-siblings: Andrew Boyd, Diane Wray (Lee), Lisa Meacham (Monty), Natalie Pewitt (Josh), Bobby and Alison Boyd; nephew, Nick Burden and other nieces and nephews. John is survived by his son, John G. Young, III.(Jennifer) and grandson, Daniel. John is predeceased by his sister, Joan Scarlette and mother, Carolyn Jauron Bain.

John's passion for the Nashville Fire Department was only over-ridden by his love of wife and family.

Service is Friday, December 30th at 11am, at West Harpeth Funeral Home - Rev. Dr. Mitch Johnson and Rev. Dr. Tim Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Dickson County Memorial Gardens.
