Mae Elizabeth "Betty" Mayes

Mae Elizabeth “Betty” Mayes, age 90, of Nashville, Tennessee, left us peacefully on July 31, 2024, with her children by her side after a long, wonderful life. She was born on February 9th, 1934, in Ironton, MO to the late Marvin Hicks and Lena Hicks. Mae grew up in Pilot Knob, MO, where she met her late husband, William Mayes. William “Bill” and Mae “Betty” moved to Nashville with their family in 1965. Here Bill and Betty settled and met their lifelong friends and often reminisced on their good times together. Betty was a wonderful homemaker and entertainer but also enjoyed the lake life and loved to fish. She was quite the dancer and traveled to all 50 states, with the ornaments and magnets to prove it. She absolutely loved the holidays and could elevate the season to a whole new level of joy and celebration. Betty’s family was the most important thing to her. Her role as a daughter, wife, mother, Mimi, and great-grandmother was something she deeply cherished.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Bill.

She leaves behind her beloved children, Suzanne (Chris) Calvert, Nanci (Dale) Collins, and David (Beverly) Mayes. Mimi loved her 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Caity (Leon), Taylor (Nikki), Bradley, Bennett (Caitlin), Maeley and Jackson with all her heart. She is survived by many dear friends that she also considered family.

Mae Elizabeth Mayes is known for her legacy of love, generosity, and kindness. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, but her memory will continue to inspire and uplift those whose lives she touched. May she rest in eternal peace.

Visitation will be held Monday, August 5th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and Tuesday, August 6th from 12:00pm to 1:00pm at West Harpeth Funeral Home located at 6962 Charlotte Pike in Nashville. The funeral service will be held at West Harpeth Funeral Home on August 6th at 1:00pm with burial to follow at Harpeth Hills Memory Garden, 9090 TN-100, Nashville, TN 37221. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
