Marie Dudley Moxley, 81, formerly of Richland, Ga., passed away on Monday, December 15, 2014, in Nashville, Tn. Born August 26, 1933, in Cuthbert, Ga., to Christopher Haywood Dudley, Jr., and Marie Carlton Dudley, Marie spent her youth in Richland, attended Barry College in Miami, and in 1954 received her B.A. in Music from the University of Georgia.
Married sixty years to Harry E. Moxley, Marie was a devoted wife and mother. Throughout their many moves-from Mississippi to Iowa to Georgia to South Carolina to Tennessee-Marie raised six children and was a devout Catholic who served as music director for most of the churches her family attended. Through her leadership, the singers whom she directed loved and admired her. Marie also taught piano from her home to many children. A Regent in the Roanoke Chapter of The National Society of the D.A.R., Marie was also in Chi Omega sorority at UGA and a member of the Richland Garden Club.
Survivors include her husband Harry E. Moxley and her six children: Beth Moxley Lee, of Charleston, SC; Harry Moxley (Stephanie), of Alexandria, Va.; Carlton Moxley Long (Arthur), of Knoxville, Tn.; Haywood Moxley (Margaret), of Nashville, Tn.; Anne Moxley Barnes (Barry), of Augusta, Ga.; John Moxley of Charleston, SC. Her nine grandchildren: Harriett and Katherine Lee; Arthur Long and Dudley Long; Sam, Henry, and Joe Moxley; Jordan Barnes; and Marlowe Moxley. Her three nieces and nephews: Mona Dudley, Chris Dudley IV, and Ruth Dudley Harris of Richland, Ga.
Marie was predeceased by her parents, Christopher Haywood Dudley, Jr., and Marie Carlton Dudley; her brother, Christopher Haywood Dudley III; mother-in-law, Maude Sherlock Moxley, and sister-in-law, Patricia Moxley of Americus.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the National Parkinson Foundation. A private family funeral and burial will be held on St. Simon's Island.
