March 24, 1921 — July 29, 2022

Oma "Jo" Jewell Scott Summers

3/24/1921 - 7/29/2022

Preceded in death by husbands: Ernest Deloy (Chico) Summers and Edward Garland; Parents: Allie Josephine Blackwood Scott and J. Garrett (JG) Scott; Siblings: Ephraim, Aaron, Mary Ruth, Kyrus, Nelda, Junior and Paul; And granddaughter: Chery D. Seiner

Survived by:  Son, Royce Scott Summers (Judy); daughters: Sandy Summers and Debbie Summers (John); 3 grandchildren: Laura Summers, Leslie Summers (Marcin Niewiara) and Scott Summers (Allison), and three great-grandchildren.

She was one of eight children born in Adamsville, Tennessee, leading a wonderful country life in which they lived off the land.  She preferred to work in the fields with her dad, rather than housework with her mom.  She picked cotton, hoed the fields, milked cows and helped raise all the crops.  She married early and made her home in Nashville, where her children were born.  In the 1940's, during the second World War, she was one of the original "Rosie the Riveter" at Vultee, and was a beautiful addition to the crew.

Later, in 1955, she worked for Southern Army Surplus across from Richland Park on Charlotte Avenue.  She stayed with the store when Mr. Bernie moved the store further down Charlotte and it became Bernie's Bargains, then later, simply Bernie's.  She was with Mr. Bernie and Ms. Ethel for over 30 years!  She stayed until he closed the store.

She loved working with the public, and all that knew her loved her.  She was outgoing and charming.  She loved needle work and was a member of "The Needle Threaders" at her church, and was very active there.  It was St John's United Methodist Church, located on Charlotte Avenue.

She loved to travel and traveled to most of the 50 states, including Hawaii and Jamaica.  She loved to cook and family would always gather on Sunday to enjoy her dinners!  She also loved any kind of needlework, crocheting and quilting.

Pallbearers:  Scott Summers, Jimmy Summers, Laura Summers, Leslie Summers, John Kirk, and Marcin Niewaira.

A special thank you to the wonderful staff The Meadows in Bellevue for their loving care.
