Skip Latt, a retired sports writer for The Associated Press, died on March 31, 2022, in Nashville, Tenn.
Born on April 3, 1948, in Hendersonville, N.C. to parents Oscar Raymond Latt Sr. and Violet Thompson Latt, Oscar Raymond Latt Jr. was a graduate of Hendersonville High School and the University of South Carolina.
He was a devoted family man, married to Elizabeth Phillips Latt for more than 50 years. He took "putting food on the table" seriously, mastering all the culinary arts from coupon-clipping to "Swedish" cooking. He was there for his sons -- William E. Latt of Dayton, Ohio, and Evan T. Latt of Nashville -- in school drop-off lanes and on soccer sidelines, and when he traveled to cover a big sports event, he delighted in selecting the coolest T-shirts and caps to take home to his boys.
Skip had a lifelong enthusiasm for sports and had, by turns, enjoyed participating as a student athlete, a professional writer and editor, a fan/coach for his sons' teams, a serious baseball card collector, and an armchair fan and analyst.
He wrote for two South Carolina newspapers, The Times Democrat of Orangeburg and The News and Courier of Charleston, before joining the Nashville AP bureau in 1982.
Survivors, in addition to his wife and sons, include sister Susan Lamb of Jacksonville, N.C., and daughter-in-law Carrie Cook Latt of Dayton, Ohio. He is also survived by an aunt and uncle, John and Becky Latt of Goldsboro, N.C., aunt Catherine Stone of Delaware, Ohio, and niece Kelly Lamb and nephew Chris Lamb, both of Jacksonville.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, at West Harpeth Funeral Home, 6962 Charlotte Pike, Nashville. Burial will be April 12 in Charleston, S.C., at Holy Cross Cemetery, following a memorial service at McAlister-Smith Funeral home, James Island, at 347 Folly Road, Charleston, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
West Harpeth Funeral Home & Crematory is honored to assist the Latt family with these arrangements.
