Virginia Carolyn Callis, age 73 of Nashville passed away February 8, 2015 at the Barton House in Nashville. Carolyn was born on May 19, 1941 to the late Leonard Melvin and Sarah Sexton Callis. She is survived by her aunts, Jean Sexton and Janie Paulson and uncles, Warren Sexton and Ronnie Callis. Carolyn was a graduate of Cohn High School where she was a Majorette and was later Head Majorette; she received her Bachelor's Degree from MTSU where she was their feature twirler and also wrote "A Band Director's Guide for Baton Twirlers." She also attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where received her Master's Degree and The Ohio State University where she received her PhD. Carolyn taught for several years at the University of Texas and retired from the University of Alabama as the Department Head and Associate Professor in the Department of Human Environmental Sciences with over 20 years of service. A Life Celebration will be held Wednesday, February 11th at 1:00 P.M. from the Chapel of West Harpeth Funeral Home with Rev. Denny Shepard officiating. Interment will follow in Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens.
