Vivian Doris Tinker, age 86, died on April 22, 2015. Doris was born July 8, 1928 in Victoria, Tennessee to the late Vivian Hudson Lay and Reverend William Marshall Lay. She briefly attended Athens College and later worked as a secretary for the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies (ORINS) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. On July 31, 1954, she married Bill Tinker, beginning a marriage lasting 60 years. The two began their married life in Southern California, and moved in 1965 to Huntsville, Alabama. In 1969 the family moved to Smyrna, Tennessee where Doris became deeply engaged with Child Evangelism Fellowship. Retirement followed in 1989 when the couple located to Crossville, Tennessee, allowing deep engagement with Central Baptist Church's Awana program, children's church, and quilting ministry. She worked closely with the Tansi Women's Club and cheered University of Alabama football.
Doris is survived by four children: Nancy Tinker Pace of Charleston, South Carolina; John Tinker of Lutz, Florida; Cindy Tinker (JD Hancock) of Nashville, Tennessee; and Rob Tinker (Kathrine Pierre Tinker) of Santa Clara, California. Doris had four grandchildren of whom she was proud and deeply loved. She is survived by Jack, Miles, and Catherine Tinker of Lutz, Florida. She was predeceased by grandson Michael Barnes of Nashville, Tennessee.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Caring Hearts Fund or to Child Evangelism Fellowship of Middle Tennessee.
Visitation will be conducted Monday morning, April 28th at 10:00 at West Harpeth Funeral Home, 6962 Charlotte Pike, Nashville, Tennessee, 37209. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11:30 with interment scheduled for 1:00 at Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 7931 McCrory Lane, Nashville. A reception will follow at the Village Chapel, 2021 21st Avenue, Nashville, Tennessee.
